With one hand, hold the flange of the nut still.
With the other hand rotate the brass ring slightly (~1/8th of a turn) and then gently bring back to the position in which the spring is no longer pushing it away.
Then snug turn the brass ring slightly more so it is snug in its position. Do not let go of the brass ring or allow it to snap back to its position, always guide it back gently. |
The brass ring is turned to verify that the preload is set correctly. The brass ring should be turned away (like in Step 2), to verify that it will not turn one full turn.
Adjusting Preload End of Spring:
...
With one hand, hold the flange of the nut. With the other hand hold the preload ring and pull it towards the spring coil to release it from the flange.
Gently guide the spring to its free position as a starting point.
Then, still holding the preload ring and flange, coil the spring up so the spring end is one full rotation from its free position. One full rotation occurs where the two ends of the spring are aligned. One full turn plus two notches is the setting that has given the best results. Guide the spring end back into position locking its location. If there is no slot directly across from the brass spring end, choose the next slot tighter. |
