Problem

This test is for: Pre 2020 Machines

X, Y or Z axis stalls. Drives have been mechanically aligned.

Solution

Alpha Tune Test

  • If the machine stalls upon moving the axis with the pendant or onscreen controls, use a ruler to measure a certain distance on the stalled stage and record the rotary and linear encoder reading for both positions.

  • If the machine still can be driven with the pendant or onscreen controls. Release the E Stop.

  • Move the axis to a position near the negative hard stop -do not let the stage reach the hard stop-. Click "Set 1" in Alpha Tune.

  • Move the axis to a position near the positive hard stop -do not let the stage reach the hard stop-. Click "Set 2" in Alpha Tune.

  • Move from Position 1 to Position 2 by clicking "Go 1" and "Go 2"

  • Repeat this 10 times and record the "Ctrl", "Meas", "Sync" and "Index Mark" values.

  • Do the “Ctrl” and “Meas” counts repeat when returning to the same position?

  • If “Ctrl” is losing counts, check the coupler is tightened, realign drive.

  • If “Meas” is losing counts check the coupler is tightened, realign drive.

  • Switch breakout boards between X and Y axis, test counts again in Alpha Tune. If the problem follows the breakout board, then replace it.

  • Switch X and Y cables on the logic board, test counts in Alpha Tune. Make sure the axis selection in Alpha Tune is inverted between X and Y.

  • If the problem remains in the same axis connection on the logic board, change the logic board.
