InSpec Classic on Windows 11

InSpec Classic on Windows 11

Special considerations may be required to run certain older variants of InSpec Classic on certain versions of Windows 11 or newer.

If you do not encounter any issues installing or using InSpec Classic on Windows 11, you can disregard this article.

Software Versions

Please use the InSpec Compatibility Search to determine the latest versions of software compatible with your machine model. Older versions of software for special use cases or legacy machine models may be available; contact your authorized dealer for additional information.

Supported machine models will generally use either InSpec Classic 2.97.10 or InSpec Classic ≥2.106 because these are the versions of software supported on Windows 10. This article primarily addresses considerations for running these versions on Windows 11.

Users of older versions of InSpec Classic should consider the following before attempting to upgrade to Windows 11.

  • If the older version has been working properly on Windows 10, it may work properly on Windows 11. However, it is recommended to evaluate whether InSpec Classic 2.97.10 will work for you before upgrading to Windows 11.

  • If the older version has been running on Windows 7 or older, it has a greater risk of compatibility issues with Windows 11. Options include:

    • Attempt to maintain the older Windows OS.

    • Attempt to upgrade to InSpec Classic 2.97.10 and evaluate whether it will work for you before upgrading to Windows 11.

InSpec Classic ≥2.106 Driver Variants

The installer for InSpec Classic will ask “Which type of metrology machine is present?” to determine which drivers to install for the corresponding machine models.

Different drivers may have different levels of compatibility with Windows 11.

Solutions for Known Issues

Program Compatibility Assistant: A driver cannot load on this device

When installing or launching InSpec Classic for older machines with older camera driver variants, Windows 11 may warn that a driver cannot be loaded due to security settings:

If you do not encounter this message, disregard the following articles.

The solutions are:

  1. Disable Core Isolation.

  2. Or, in case this is not possible, download and install alternative drivers.

Machine or Camera Connection Halts after Periods of Inactivity

On newer PCs more common with Windows 11, USB connections may be suspended if the OS determines that they are inactive. This can interrupt proper operation of InSpec Classic, which requires continuous connection to the Micro-Vu machine regardless of whether the user is actively interacting with the software. Symptoms may include the video stream turning black and immediately recovering on interacting with the software.

The solution is to Disable USB Selective Suspend.

InSpec Classic Cannot Access the Camera or “Frame Grabber”

If the drivers are installed correctly and the camera shows up properly in the Windows Device Manager, it is possible that another application is holding the camera open, preventing InSpec Classic from accessing it. See Diagnosing and Reporting Camera Issues for more information about verifying the correct behavior of the camera.

In Windows 11, Microsoft Teams is built into the OS, and it is possible for it to identify USB-connected cameras as webcams suitable for video-conferencing and prevent them from being used by other applications like InSpec Classic. The solution is to close or disable Microsoft Teams, or configure it not to access the camera that is part of your Micro-Vu machine.
