Encoder Calibration

This article applies only to Post 2020 Machines Excel (X,Y and Z-axis) and Vertex (Z-axis only)

Procedure

Encoder Alignment

  1. Remove all covers to be able to access the encoder readhead of the corresponding axis.

  2. Make sure that the calibration LED on the encoder readhead is not illuminated. If it is illuminated, press and hold the calibration button on the interface for >3s, or until the calibration LED is no longer illuminated.

  3. Make sure the center LED of the encoder readhead is illuminated green. If it is not illuminated green, the yaw and/or pitch of the readhead have to be readjusted. If that is the case, loosen the two M4 screws holding the readhead bracket carefully and adjust the readhead until the center LED indicates green.

  4. Watch the colored light on the encoder interface/connector (located within the electronics enclosure of the machine) while driving/pushing the corresponding axis across the entire travel.

The color indicates the acceptability of the readhead distance relative to the scale:

  5. Adjust the readhead distance in case the light indicates a distance that is not acceptable,
by using the fine adjustment screws of the encoder readhead bracket.

It is considered failing if the light changes to red or orange at any point during the travel!

Encoder Calibration

  1. Press the calibration button on the encoder interface/connector for less than 2 seconds, using i.e. a 2mm allen key. The calibration LED on the readhead will single flash yellow.

Installation guide: TONiC™ T103x RTLC20/FASTRACK™ linear encoder system

  2. Calibrate the encoder without crossing an index mark (incremental signal calibration).
Slowly drive the corresponding axis back and forth, using the pendant or pushing the axis, ensuring that you stay within the limit marks until calibration LED begins to double flash yellow.

  3. Phase the encoder by driving/pushing the axis across the reference mark, until the calibration light stops double flashing.

The calibration procedure is completed when the calibration LED turns off. All calibration values are automatically stored.
