Platen Error

Problem

This troubleshooting article applies only to Post 2020 Machines

If the machine is not operating and the ”information light” at the rear status panel of the machine and the firmware LED on the logic board flashes with the following eight-bit pattern as described here:

0001 1010

Where 0 indicates a short pulse which is 1/4 second and 1 indicates a long pulse which is 1 second long.

This error means that the platen has reported a failure to the Logic Board which can have multiple causes.

Solution

For a more detailed failure explanation open Motorscope like described here:
Motorscope Access

Go to: View → Tuning and select “Platen Tuning”

This window shows specifically which fault was reported by the platen.

The controls "open platen" and "close platen" need to be used carefully.

If the machine is not manually moved out of the way of the platen, the platen will collide with the machine!

Below is a quick description of each fault source:

Error

Description

Error

Description

Master

The platen is faulted because the Logic Board told it to. This is always present when the machine is faulted. This fault can be ignored.

Limit

There are various limit switches on the machine for determining the platen's position. The limit fault occurs when these switches encounter an illegal state. This can be caused by the platen opening too far, the encoder failing, an object preventing the platen from closing, or a failure in the limit switch units.

Stall

This fault occurs when the platen tries to move, but does not detect motion. This is most often caused by poor actuator or encoder connection on the platen board. This can also be caused by a failing actuator.

Comms

This fault means that the platen communication has failed. This fault appears when the machine first boots and can be ignored. If this fault appears after the machine has booted, an issue with the cable or the Logic Board may be present.

Edges

The platen has safety edges (long black strips) along the arms to detect if an object is preventing the platen from closing. This fault is active if these switches become pressed. Improper safety edge mounting or poor connection can also cause this fault.

OvCur

This refers to an over-current event. This means that the actuator has pulled more than the allowed current. This can be caused by excessive mechanical resistance in the platen assembly or by a failing actuator.

Unconfig

This fault means that the platen has not been given a configuration (telling it to be a 590 or a 700 platen). The user manual has instructions for how to do this. This fault should only be seen when the platen board has been replaced due to service.
